William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors
Info
Building on a decades-long tradition, the Cambridge University European Theatre Group (ETG) will be touring the European mainland this December with a production of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors.
The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating and hilarious works. A full-blown farce, set in the mysterious and enchanting coastal town of Ephesus; it chronicles the story of two sets of twins, separated at birth, who cause mayhem when they find themselves in the same city many years later. Infused with mystery and magic, the play is framed around the impending execution of the Antipholus twins’ father, Egeon, combining provoking ideas around fate, duty, and love with the hilarity of mistaken identity to create a multi-faceted and truly irresistible play.
Our interpretation of this hilarious romp brings out the punky, youthful, rebellious and subversive nature of Shakespeare. Inviting into focus the play’s themes of madness, performativity and the absurd, we transform Ephesus into a magical and mysterious town in the design, with the enchantment of the ocean pouring into the mysterious alleyways of the town. With energetic costumes, thrilling fights and troublesome seagulls, we want to invite the audience to share in the delight of one of Shakespeare's most electrifying comedies.
