'TRISTES TROPIQUES' - Korean Films at BIFFF

Dit jaar viert het Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) zijn 44e editie, die plaatsvindt in Brussels Expo van 3 tot 18 april, en zet het zijn traditie voort als een van Europa’s toonaangevende festivals voor fantastische cinema. Bekend om het vertonen van gedurfde en fantasierijke films, brengt het festival internationale filmmakers, professionals uit de industrie en publiek samen met een gedeelde passie voor genres zoals thriller, horror en sciencefiction.

In een bijzondere samenwerking kondigt het Korean Cultural Center (KCC) met genoegen aan dat twee Zuid-Koreaanse films zijn geselecteerd voor het programma van dit jaar, wat de groeiende internationale erkenning van de Koreaanse cinema onderstreept en de culturele uitwisseling tussen Zuid-Korea en België bevordert.

Onder de geselecteerde films springt Tristes Tropiques (2025) eruit als een gedurfd en dynamisch voorbeeld van hedendaagse Zuid-Koreaanse actiefilms. De film combineert intense actie met een neo-noir thrillersensibiliteit en verkent thema’s zoals loyaliteit, verraad en wraak in een meedogenloze omgeving. 

Het verhaal draait rond een groep jonge huurmoordenaars die verbonden zijn aan een mysterieuze organisatie genaamd “Tristes Tropiques”, getraind in jungle‑oorlogsvoering door hun enigmatische leider, de Master. Na een schokkend incident dat hun cohesie op de proef stelt, worstelen de leden met onderling wantrouwen en zweren bloedige wraak, wat leidt tot escalerend conflict en spanning. De cast bestaat uit Lee Shin-young als Lu, het jongste lid van de groep, Park Yu-rim als Jojo, Kim Myung-min als de Master en Park Hae-soo als Jang.Park Hoon-jung, regisseur en scenarioschrijver van de film, staat bekend om zijn kenmerkende benadering van actie- en thrillercinema, een stijl die prominent tot uiting komt in dit werk door de intense psychologische spanning, gestileerde actie en complexe verhaallijnen.

Tristes Tropiques (2025) beleeft zijn Belgische première op het BIFFF als onderdeel van de International Competition op 17 april om 20:00 uur, en markeert daarmee zijn eerste officiële publieke vertoning in het land. De film wordt vertoond met ondertitels in het Engels, Frans en Nederlands. Daarnaast is het geluid beschikbaar in meerdere talen, waaronder het originele Koreaans, Engels, Chinees, Japans en Thais, zodat het toegankelijk is voor het diverse internationale publiek van het festival.

This year, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) celebrates its 44th edition, taking place at Brussels Expo from April 3 to 18, and continuing its tradition as one of Europe’s leading festivals for fantastic cinema. Known for showcasing bold and imaginative films, the festival brings together international filmmakers, industry professionals and audiences with a shared passion for genres such as thriller, horror and science fiction.

In a special collaboration, the Korean Cultural Center (KCC) is pleased to announce that two South Korean films have been selected for this year’s program, highlighting the growing international recognition of Korean cinema and promoting cultural exchange between South Korea and Belgium. Among the featured films, Tristes Tropiques (2025) stands out as a bold and dynamic example of contemporary South Korean action cinema. The film combines intense action with a neo‑noir thriller sensibility, exploring themes of loyalty, betrayal and revenge in a ruthless environment. 

The story centers on a group of young assassins affiliated with a mysterious organization known as “Tristes Tropiques”, trained in jungle warfare by their enigmatic leader, the Master. Following a shocking incident that shakes their cohesion, the members struggle with mutual distrust and vow bloody revenge, leading to escalating conflict and tension. The cast includes Lee Shin-young as Lu, the youngest member of the group, Park Yu-rim as Jojo, Kim Myung-min as the Master and Park Hae-soo as Jang. Park Hoon-jung, director and screenwriter of the film, is renowned for his distinctive approach to action and thriller cinema, a style that is prominently reflected in this work through its intense psychological tension, stylized action and complex narrative structure.  

Tristes Tropiques (2025) will have its Belgian premiere at the BIFFF being part of the International competition on April 17 at 20.00, marking its first official public screening in the country. The film will feature subtitles in English, French, and Dutch. In addition, the audio will be available in multiple languages including the original Korean, as well as English, Chinese, Japanese and Thai, ensuring accessibility for the festival’s diverse international audience.
