The iconic radio building at the always lively Flagey Square was constructed between 1935 and 1938 as an innovative “sound factory” for the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting. Architect Joseph Diongre gave the complex its characteristic shape of a stately packet boat, a concept that gained international recognition for its pioneering architecture, exceptional functionality, and groundbreaking acoustics. Today, the building is known as Flagey, a vibrant cultural center. It houses not only concert halls, studios, and meeting spaces, but also an active radio and TV station, keeping the building’s original purpose alive. The fact that Flagey still stands is remarkable: by the end of the 20th century, it had been proposed for demolition due to its dilapidated state. Thanks to strong public mobilization followed by restoration, it is now a recognizable, protected, and beloved city landmark.
