Music has always played a central role in the cultural life of Saint Paul's Girls School in London. The famous composer Gustav Holst was appointed as the School's first Director of Music in 1905 and remained in post until his death in 1934. During his directorship, he wrote The Planets, and also The Saint Paul's Suite, Brook Green Suite for string Orchestra. The current Composer in Residence at St Paul’s is Bernard Hughes whose music and arrangements you will hear today. His music has been performed at major concert halls in Britain and abroad, including at the Royal Albert Hall when his piece “Birdchant” was premiered at the BBC Proms in 2021.
Pupils at the school are regularly represented at the highest levels in the National Youth Orchestra, National Youth Choir and in many the junior departments of the various prestigious London conservatoires. The students performing in this concert our aged between 13 to 15 years of age
