LCIS Irish Book Club

Cursus met open sessies Literatuur

The Leuven Centre for Irish Studies warmly welcomes you to the return of its Irish Book Club, now online, starting Wednesday 18 November 2020 16:00-18:00 (Belgian time). This year we will be reading a combination of brand-new publications and evergreens; some of the classics from Irish fiction alongside short fiction and novels by celebrated and award-winning writers such as Jan Carson, Donal Ryan and Maggie O’Farrell. We’ll get together on a monthly basis through Zoom in the comfort of our own homes (with a lovely cup of tea, a G&T, or whatever you fancy). Like last year, each text will be introduced by one of the members and you are all invited to join in with your views and questions. If you want to join for only one or a few of the sessions that is all possible.
Our first session will take place on Wednesday 18 November, and we’ll be reading three short stories from Wendy Erskine’s celebrated debut collection Sweet Home, published in 2018 by The Stinging Fly Press. Stories will be made available upon registration. We’re delighted to announce that this year we’ll have Northern Irish writers Wendy Erskine and Jan Carson joining us from Belfast for our first two sessions! They will be happy to answer questions and comment, or just have a chat about the stories’ backgrounds (daily life in Northern Ireland after the Peace Process).

Our reading list (16:00-18:00 Belgian time):
• Wednesday 18 November: selected short stories from Wendy Erskine’s debut collection Sweet Home. We’re very lucky to have Wendy Erskine join us from Belfast during our first session!
• Wednesday 16 December: Jan Carson’s novel The Fire Starters (2019 winner of the EU Prize for Literature). We’re delighted that Jan Carson will make a guest appearance too!
• Thursday 21 January: selected short stories from Sinéad Gleeson’s 2020 anthology The Art of the Glimpse
• Thursday 18 February: Sheridan le Fanu’s novella Carmilla
• Thursday 11 March: George Bernard Shaw’s play John Bull’s Other Island
• Thursday 8 April: Patrick Kavanagh’s The Green Fool
• Thursday 22 April: Donal Ryan’s best-selling novel Strange Flowers
• Thursday 6 May: Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet (winner of the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction)
