Bassem Youssef Egyptische comedian Bassem Youssef komt op 3 maart 2023 voor het eerst naar België. Hij brengt zijn voorstelling 'Euro Tour' tijdens Mad Goat in Antwerpen.  Hartchirurg Bassem Youssef, de Jon Stewart van de Arabische wereld, was de gastheer van het populaire tv-programma Al Bernameg - de eerste politieke satireshow in het Midden-Oosten. De oorspronkelijke show van 5 minuten op YouTube groeide uit tot de meest bekeken show in het Midden-Oosten met 30 miljoen kijkers per week en meer dan een miljoen abonnees op zijn YouTube-kanaal. Het programma Al Bernameg was controversieel door zijn humoristische maar gedurfde kritiek op de heersende machten. Dit leidde tot meerdere rechtszaken tegen de show en de gastheer. In 2014 kondigde Youssef het einde van de show aan vanwege de overweldigende politieke druk op het programma. Youssef verhuisde kort daarna naar de Verenigde Staten en verscheen als Senior Middle East Correspondent in The Daily Show met Jon Stewart. Hij speelde mee in Tickling Giants, een documentaire van Sara Taksler en presenteerde een digitale serie The Democracy Handbook. Ook bracht hij een boek uit over zijn persoonlijke ervaringen: Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring. Als erkenning voor zijn succes werd Youssef genoemd in Time Magazine als een van de 'meest invloedrijke mensen van 2013'. Hij publiceerde in 2021 een kinderboekenreeks De magische realiteit van Nadia. Dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, Egyptian heart surgeon turned world-famous political comedian, Bassem Youssef was the creator and host of the first political satire show in the Middle East and the most watched show in the Arab World with 30 million viewers each week. Throughout its three season, Al-Bernameg remained controversial for its hilarious and bold criticism of the ruling powers. During its final season in 2014, the show achieved unprecedented ratings before Youssef announced its termination due to overwhelming political pressures on the show and the airing channels. Shortly after, Youssef moved to the United States and served as a resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Since then, he has appeared as a Senior Middle East Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, hosted a digital series, The Democracy Handbook and starred in Tickling Giants, a documentary by Sara Taksler featuring Youssef’s story with Al Bernameg. Youssef also released a book about his experience: Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring. In recognition of his success, Youssef was named among the Time Magazine most influential list for 2013 – under the “Pioneers” category, was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the CPJ, and was chosen by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the global thinkers during the same year.
