Na het kwartet now h e r e (2011) creëert Salva Sanchis een solo voor zichzelf. Hij wordt daarbij live begeleid door pianist Yutaka Oya, die korte composities speelt van György Ligeti, John Cage, Luciano Berio, Jo Kondo en Keiko Harada.
Angle gaat over de perceptie van dans en verschuift de focus van de dans zelf naar de blik van de toeschouwer en de manier waarop hij of zij de dans bekijkt. Zoals we allemaal weten, bestaat dans, net zoals muziek, niet op zichzelf. Elke vorm van podiumkunst heeft een publiek nodig om zijn doel waar te maken. De quote hierboven geeft aan dat wat we zien kan variëren, afhankelijk van de manier waarop we ernaar kijken. Met zijn nieuwe creatie brengt Salva Sanchis een brug tot stand tussen de toeschouwer en de dans.

Angle injecteert de open ervaring van de dans niet alleen met muziek, maar ook met tekstfragmenten. Gedachten, quotes, en reflecties van artiesten verbreden het betekenisveld van de dans. Eerder dan een verklaring te geven, worden er mogelijke richtingen uitgezet. Eerder dan een bepaalde perceptie op te dringen, worden we er als toeschouwer van bewust gemaakt dat we de manier waarop we waarnemen in de eerste plaats zelf bepalen.
Salva Sanchis toont en bevraagt de relatie tussen dans, muziek en tekst enerzijds en de perceptie daarvan door het publiek anderzijds. Hij kiest voor een model waarin alle elementen onderling verbonden zijn, maar toch hun autonomie en gelijkwaardigheid bewaren. Angle streeft naar een gelaagde structuur die ons als kijker uitdaagt verbanden te leggen tussen de verschillende componenten en onze perceptie rijker maakt.
Het uiteindelijke objectief voor de dans en voor de kijker is om elkaar te ontmoeten vanuit een gelijkwaardig perspectief, vrij en verantwoordelijk. En net zoals geluid door de ruimte reist en pas in onze geest muziek wordt, zal ook de dans onze geest ten dans vragen.

Salva Sanchis- Angle


Angle is a dance solo created and performed by Salva Sanchis. It is set to short piano solo pieces by György Ligeti, John Cage, Luciano Berio, Jo Kondo and Keiko Harada, which will be performed live by pianist Yutaka Oya.
Angle is dance piece about the perception of dance. Its title refers specifically to the way we look at dance. As we all know, dance, just like music, doesnt stand alone. It needs an audience to fulfill its purpose, and the audience brings in as much baggage as the artist to that relation.
As the zen quote above tells us, since the movement actually happens in our minds, what we see might vary depending on how we look at it.
In Angle, Salva Sanchis establishes a bridge between the spectator and the dance, so that this time, the spectator is not left alone in figuring out how to look at the dance. Thoughts, quotes and artists ideas will be provided as a subtle framing to the open experience that the dance offers to us. The space for free interpretation will remain open. Rather than receiving an explanation, we will be shown possible directions. Rather than being dictated what to perceive, we will be made aware that how we perceive is mainly dictated by ourselves in the first place.
Salva Sanchis shows and questions the relation between dance, music and text on the one side, and the perception of each of those elements by the audience on the other side. He chooses for a construction in which all the parts are interlinked and yet they keep their autonomy. Thus, Angle consists of a multi-layered structure that invites us to make connections between elements.
The final objective will be for the dance and the spectator to meet on equal terms, both free and responsible. And just as sounds travel through space and become music only inside our minds, the dance too will invite our minds to...dance with it.
